Your guitar's logo is the two "A"s inlaid as a vertical mirror image.

During Kazuo Yairi's supervision the Alvarez Yairi logo was a mother of pearl A -Y design inlaid into a headstock that had a rosewood veneer. Legend has it that under his supervision a Martin D28 was carefully taken apart, measurements and patterns were made, then the Martin was put back together and they began to make dreadnaught body acoustics and comparing the volume and tone of what they made to the Martin, fine tuning their process with each guitar. Your guitar and the one I worked on are only a year apart - in that time frame of the early '70s my understanding is that Kazuo Yairi was in charge of the shop. You win!Ĭlick to expand.Had to be one of K Yairi's guys. but every so often one turns up for silly money because people don't always associate quality without the big name brand. Yeah boy - if you've got a K Yairi signature on the label you've got a very nice one for sure! Of course there will be many jealous pickers out there. The woman who owns it swooned and smiled when she finger picked it. After bringing this one back to life (boy, does it sound and play nice!) I promised myself that if I ever came across one, even in rough condition, I would buy it, bring it home and fix it. The sunburst versions (S designation after the model number) are very rare indeed. Ebony fingerboard, solid spruce top, solid figured mahohany back and sides with back strip very much like yours and the original construction was super clean - cleaner glue joints on the braces and kerfing than what Martin was making in 1973! If you can find one in very good condition you'll pay anywhere from $600 to $1500 based on cosmetics alone. These DY 57 guitars were $400 new and built to mimic the appearance of a Martin D28 - all the details were there. Cracks in the top, bridge lifting, plastic bridge saddle folding over, neck upbowed, frets 1 through 13 badly worn.

The '73 DY 57S I restored was picked up at a yard sale for $35 maybe 30 years ago and it was allowed to go to hell through neglect.
